BANKS TOWNSHIP — A two-vehicle accident involving an Amish buggy and a pick-up truck caused injuries to two Amish boys, one of whom was flown to a hospital in Altoona for treatment of his injuries Friday morning.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, the accident occurred around 8 a.m., when an Amish buggy driven by a 14-year-old Amish boy was traveling south on Johnsonburg Road, Banks Township, when a pick-up truck driven by Charles Pennington, 63, Glen Campbell, also traveling south, came upon the crest of a hill behind the buggy.

Police said the sun was in Pennington’s eyes, and he didn’t see the buggy traveling through a shady area of the road.

According to police, the right front of Pennington’s vehicle struck the left rear buggy wheel, which caused injury to the horse and damaged the buggy.

Police said the seven-year-old suffered an arm injury and blunt force trauma to the head and was flown to Altoona Medical Center by STAT MedEvac for treatment. The 14-year-old suffered a leg injury and was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital for treatment. Pennington was not injured.

According to police, Pennington’s vehicle sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene, while the buggy sustained major damage. The condition of the horse was unknown.

Police were assisted by the Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company, Jefferson County EMS and the Rossiter Volunteer Fire Company.
