April 19, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This evening, Punxsutawney Area High School's Athletic Department will host its Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

In anticipation of the event, The Spirit has featured the biography of one member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 each day.

Today's featured athlete is Cliff Thompson.

Thompson earned eight letters while attending PAHS, including three in football, three in wrestling and two in baseball.

He was co-captain of the 1977 undefeated football team, Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention for two years, All Gazetteland first-team linebacker, first-team Central PA Athletic Conference linebacker and a Big 33 nominee.

He was also named MVP in his junior and senior years, as well as being honorary captain as a senior.

He was a talented punter, leading with an average of 41 yards per punt.

In wrestling, he was a co-captain his senior year and was on the undefeated 1977 wrestling squad.

His wrestling record was 16-4-1.

In baseball, he had eight doubles, 26 runs batted in, 23 runs and 13 stolen bases.

His career batting average was .328, which led that 1978 team to a 16-3 record.

After a semester of football at IUP, Cliff chose to enroll at Hutchinson Kansas Junior College to play baseball.

This led to a scholarship to play baseball at Emporia State University.

He is still among the leaders in several offensive categories for the Hornets, including seventh all-time with 24 career home runs, seventh all-time with 15 home runs in a single season and ninth all-time with 141 RBI.

He’s been employed by Ford Motors for 30 years.
