Thomas E. Austen, 69, Sigel, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at home.

He was born June 15, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edwin Armstrong and Margaret B. (Hanlon) Austen.

May 14, 1977, in Sigel, he married Barbara J. Burford, who survives.

Mr. Austen worked in elementary education for the Brookville Area School District for 10 years and retired as the safety supervisor from National Fuel Gas.

He was a member of the Sigel United Methodist Church; was a graduate (B.S. and M.Ed.) from Clarion University; a member of the Society of Safety Engineers; and a former member of the Sigel Volunteer Fire Company.

Mr. Austen was an avid outdoorsman, and he enjoyed his family. He also enjoyed spending time with his grand-puppy, Zeus.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a son, Scott T. Austen and wife Melissa of Clarion; two daughters, Erin E. Austen and husband Hatem of Denver, Colo., and Beth A. Austen of Glenshaw; and a sister, Carol A. Gill and husband Don of Allison Park.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. Austen.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at the McKinney Funeral Home, Brookville.

A funeral service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at the funeral home with Pastor Seth McPherson officiating.
