- CYBER MONDAY
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Don’t blink, or you’ll miss what could be the best weekend to see fall foliage in this part of western Pennsylvania.
Most trees are in full color with deep reds and bright yellows prevailing, said Eric Leister, a meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College.
This weekend will be better than next weekend, as there’s the possibility of more leaves dropping due to windy weather conditions today and tomorrow, Leister said.
In the far north, many locations are already at their peak, Leister said, and by next weekend, many of the northern locations will drop most of their leaves.
Warren, McKean and Potter counties will be best for viewing this weekend.
Leister said Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfield and Indiana counties should be good for this weekend and next weekend.
Very little green vegetation remains, and a few trees have yet to reach peak, but are showing very bright, well-developed colors, Leister said.
These trees will peak very quickly, although some trees are slow turning due to the weather.
“All the rain we had at the end of summer and the beginning of fall got the whole color change out of whack, which has caused some trees to not change as quickly as they normally do,” he said. “A lot of times what will happen as a result of an abundance of rainfall is the leaves will change and fall right off the trees.”
Leister said some of the leaves will still be green when they fall off the trees, which is a side effect of heavy rainfall.
The rain has a large effect on how the leaves will change color and when they will fall off, he said.
Leister said this weekend is going to be quite windy at times, with wind gusts up to 40 mph, which could also cause the leaves to come down as well.
Jamie Popson, of the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, said nowhere else in the country is nature on display as brilliantly or abundantly as it is in the Pennsylvania Wilds.
“It doesn’t matter which part of the Pennsylvania Wilds you visit, whichever way you turn, the natural beauty of our region will take your breath away and have you wanting to see even more,” she said.
