Supervisor: Tank might have a year of life left

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Wednesday, members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board received a recommendation from the district’s maintenance department regarding the replacement of a cold water storage tank at Longview Elementary School.

The tank was leaking, but when a maintenance crew went to fix it, another leak started, Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said.

The 1,000-gallon tank is the original to the building, and now, the district is on borrowed time as far as its reliability — maybe a year, said Phil Heitzenrater, district maintenance supervisor.

He also suggested performing an asbestos abatement ahead of time, so when it the tank does fail, crews could replace it and not worry about asbestos.

Heitzenrater said the asbestos can be removed while the students are in the building.

Wolfe said he has been through two renovation projects, and asbestos abatement occurred while classes were being held.

“They sealed off the part of the building where the abatement would occur,” he said.

Wolfe recommended that the district have someone look at the tank and the asbestos so the board knows what needs to be done and how much it will cost.

Once the abatement is done — and if that tank springs another leak — the tank could be replaced next summer, Heitzenrater said.

Also Wednesday:
• Board members Bob Pascuzzo and Francis J. Molinaro asked about hiring CS&E for pneumatic temperature control at a cost of $15,360.
Heitzenrater that was for an annual calibration, and the firm replaced another company that is going out of business.

CS&E would also perform the planned maintenance of the boiler systems and gas burners at a cost of $3,750.

The board will vote on the agreement at the Nov. 14 meeting.

• The board will also be asked to approve $5,377 for the Junior Library Guild to supply elementary library books.

• The board will also vote on two LERTA applications: Universal Well Services for property located at 114 Universal Dr., and Robert and Lisa Pascuzzo for property located at 470 Beyer Ave.

• At the November voting meeting, the board will be asked to approve a cooperative agreement between the district and Riverview Intermediate Unit for federal grant monies.
