PUNXSUTAWNEY — We are "down to the wire" as far as Christmas shopping is concerned, while the band Down to the Wire is just getting wound up with the annual "Milk Can Jam" to be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Punxsutawney Eagles.

"We are celebrating 25 years of the classic Down to the Wire band consisting of Dom Catanzarito, bass; Joe Serian, lead vocals; Kevin Cielo, keyboard and vocals; and myself, guitars," said Matt Taladay, spokesperson for Down to the Wire.

Taladay said that Brian Rowan will be the drummer for the band on Sunday, but was not part of the original band.

"We've had hiatuses and mixed memberships, but our core group is back together," Taladay said, adding that the "Milk Can Jam" first began eight years ago.

He said the band wanted to do something to help hungry people in the community and starving people in the world.

"I've always heard the phrase, 'think globally, act locally,'" Taladay said.

"The band is one of the founders of this event, and every year we get together with other bands and musicians and take turns performing," he said.

Taladay said at some point, the event outgrew Murdocks (Rumors), where it first originated, and for a couple of years it was held at the Walston Club.

"This year, we are holding it at the Punxsutawney Eagles Club because they offered to donate its use for the event," he said.

There are three acoustic guitar acts that will also participate: Jesse Dechurch, John Griffiths and Catanzarito; Steve Duffalo; and the Frostburg Lounge Lizards featuring Joe Pascuzzo and Taladay, he said.
Taladay said there's going to be a local talent showcase for acoustic act singers and players from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Anyone who would like to perform can contact Taladay ahead of time by calling 590-3501.

He said this year, as always, the proceeds will go to the local food banks and World Hunger Relief.

World Hunger Relief has been around since post-World War II and provides agricultural resources to people in poor villages," Taladay said, adding that the organization gives the village a cow that's expecting a calf, providing them with milk and a calf.

Taladay said that creates sustainable agriculture and creates a livelihood.

Some villages receive goats and others chickens, he said.

"There's no admission charge for Sunday's annual fundraiser, but we accept donations, which are placed in milk cans which is why it's called the Milk Can Jam," Taladay said.

"There are lots of great causes this time of year; it's easy to forget that there are kids in the community that are undernourished and there are children around the world that are dying because they aren't receiving the very basics when it comes to nutrition," he said.

"We hope to get people to think about it a little bit and come out and have fun in the process," Taladay said.

Down to the Wire will perform some dance sets beginning at 8 p.m. and throughout the rest of the evening, he said.
