Strong finish provides junior-varsity Chucks with 12-9 mark
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior-varsity boys' basketball team won eight of its final 10 games to complete the season with a 12-9 record last Friday.
The Chucks lost their final game — 45-32 to Bradford — but had won eight of nine games entering that matchup after they started the season 4-7.
The Chucks began to erase the rough start once they became more comfortable as a team.
"The kids started playing together more as a team. It wasn't just one person, it was the whole team," Punxsy JV coach Darrin Kriebel said. "The kids were getting better at practice. Scrimmaging against the varsity team only helped their confidence."
The season concluded with a rough loss to Bradford. Punxsy was outscored 16-6 and 14-5 during the first and third quarters, respectively. Those troublesome quarters put the Chucks in a hole during each half.
Punxsy was behind 24-18 by halftime and 38-23 entering the fourth quarter.
Hunter Tibbs scored a team-best 11 points for Punxsy, including nine by halftime. Ian Miller scored seven points, and Devin Nicholson had five.
Chucks 50, Clearfield 43
HYDE — The Chucks outscored Clearfield by 11 points during the third quarter and carried that into a 50-43 win Feb. 16 on the road.
Both teams scored 21 points heading into halftime when Punxsy used a 23-11 third quarter to pull away.
Ian Miller (15 points) and Hunter Tibbs (12) each scored in double figures for Punxsy. Garrett Zimmerman followed with seven points, and Tim Peace had five.
Chucks 62, Penn Cambria 57
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A strong second half and balanced scoring propelled the Chucks toward a 62-57 triumph over Penn Cambria last Monday.
Punxsy was behind 32-24 at halftime before it used a 19-14 third quarter to get back into the game. Its 19-11 fourth quarter carried into the win.
Six Chucks scored at least six points, led by Ian Miller's 16 points. Hunter Tibbs wasn't far behind, scoring 12 points.
Tim Pearce, Jesse Venturini and Garrett Zimmerman had eight points apiece, and Luke Spack tallied six.
Chucks 62, DuBois 44
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A 21-point second quarter helped Punxsy down DuBois Feb. 11, 62-44.
The Chucks led 8-7 after the first quarter before their huge second frame led to a 29-13 halftime score in their favor.
Punxsy outscored the Beavers 33-31 during the second half.
Ian Miller led with 16 points, making 10-of-12 free throws in the game and scoring nine points in the fourth quarter.
Hunter Tibbs followed with 15 points. He nailed two three-pointers and had nine points by halftime.
Jesse Venturini added 10 points, Tim Pearce had eight, and Garrett Zimmerman scored six points.
