PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of SADD at Punxsutawney Area High School were among students across Pennsylvania sticking it to underage drinking this week.

Tuesday, SADD members posted 250 stickers on cases of beer at Sandy’s Beverages with a clear message: “Don’t be a party to underage drinking. It’s against the law.”

The event, Project Sticker Shock, runs this week throughout Pennsylvania.
According to the Pennsylvania DUI Association, alcohol has been identified as the No. 1 drug of choice among youth — and according to youth, one of the easiest to get.

PAHS SADD members said their peers agree that alcohol is relatively easy to get in this area, but noted others said that it’s even easier to get drugs.

Chuck Kelley, of Sandy’s, said the distributor has had little problem with underage youth trying to buy alcohol.

“They know we card,” he said, adding that if there’s the slightest doubt that a buyer is under 21, that person is carded.

“I’ve carded people who were 30 years old,” Kelley said.

Project Sticker Shock is the first of two major events SADD is undertaking before prom. The next event will be the annual mock crash at PAHS, in which students witness a simulated vehicle crash with fatalities, with prom-bound students in one car, and another vehicle in which the driver was driving drunk.

Prom is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

Brigette Trusal, who co-advises SADD with Bridget States, said this was the first year the PAHS chapter undertook Project Sticker Shock.
She said States learned about the program via an e-mail, and the group opted to take part this year.
