Steve “Lefty” Frank Ballas, 87

Steve “Lefty” Frank Ballas, 87, Punxsutawney, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Wellington Heights.

He was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Duquesne, a son of the late John Gabor Balázs and Julia (Palagyi) Balázs.

He was married to Betty (Dupak) Ballas, who preceded him in death.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

The co-owner of Blue Tavern in Walston, Mr. Ballas was also an assessor for Young Township. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Stephanie Douglass and husband Ron of Westminster, Md., and Susan Jordan and husband Rick of Punxsutawney; three sisters, Pearl Cifaldi of Plantation, Fla., Helen Pilipovich of North Huntington and Sally Corso of Port Orange, Fla.; five grandchildren, Evan, Megan, Brooke, Amberly and Matthew; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Margaret Pivarnik, Jean Agapoff, Betty Ballas, Lillian Ballas and Katie Podomnik; and two brothers, John and Robert Ballas.

At the family’s request there will be no visitation and services will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home.
