September 12, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Ss.C.D. girls' basketball squad split Saturday's match up against Johnsonburg.

The fifth-grade girls' began the day but struggled against an opponent with more height and ultimately lost 21-17.

The Ss.C.D. girls were out-rebounded by 25 and could not make up the disadvantage.

Emily Griebel led the scoring with seven, and Kylee Shoemaker was a close second, putting four points on the board.

Megan Ray, Bailey Jones and Kyrie Nestel each added two points to round out the scoring for the fifth-graders.

Jones had seven rebounds while Ally Whitman had five, but it was not enough for a victory.

"It was a good defensive effort but leaves room for improvement," Kurt Nestel, director of the Ss.C.D. girls' basketball program said.

The sixth-graders then put up a successful all-around team effort. The Ss.C.D. girls held Johnsonburg to just 11 points and won the contest, 26-11.

Nestel called it a "nice, balanced offensive effort" from the sixth-grade girls.

Kaitlyn Doverspike, Kate Horner and Leah Miller all put up an impressive six points.

Kylie Lingenfelter scored four, and Jordyn Powell and Elyse White each had two.

Horner also had six assists to help her team to victory.

Doverspike, Miller and Powell each made five rebounds.

"Defensively again, the sixth grade almost pitched a shutout as they made it very tough for Johnsonburg to get inside," Nestel said.

Nestel noted it was an impressive game for sixth-grade coach Steve White and called it a great effort by the girls.

The fifth-grade girls will play at 4 p.m. today.
