HERSHEY — Both of the Punxsy wrestling team's state-qualifiers are one victory away from a medal after each won a bout at the PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Spack (31-6), a junior, won his only bout of the day and will compete next in today's championship quarterfinals, and Young (32-3), a senior, went 1-1 Thursday and will next compete in the consolation second round.

Spack pinned W.C. Rustin junior Steve Quinn (34-15) in 2:51 during their opening-round bout at 135 pounds. The other two 135-pounders from Spack's Northwest region — Cathedral Prep's Michael McBryde and DuBois' Tom Sleigh — went 0-2 and were eliminated Thursday.

Spack will now face Bethel Park junior Dylan Mogan (33-6) in the quarterfinals. Mogan earned a 7-1 decision victory in his first bout.

Young lost his first match of the tournament by a 5-2 decision to Susquehanna Township junior Daniel King (39-2). The Punxsy senior did survive to wrestle again today, as he registered a 6-0 decision win over Council Rock North senior Shane Longstreth (29-12) in his first consolation bout.

During Young's only other trip to states in 2009, he went 1-1 on the first day before losing his first bout on the second day. Spack went 0-2 and was eliminated in the first day during his only prior state experience in 2010.

Both Punxsy grapplers will compete again today, with the championship quarterfinals beginning at 1 p.m. and the consolation second round starting at 2:45 p.m.

Spack has joined elite District IX company this year, as the only other Class AAA wrestlers to advance to the championship quarterfinals were DuBois' Geno Morelli and Bradford's Mark Havers, both at 152 pounds.

Clearfield's Shane Peters (103), Christian Stone (112), Nolan Barger (130) and Derek Danver (171) were eliminated.
