Signal replacement on hold until parts arrive
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The mast arm for the traffic signal at the intersection of West Mahoning Street and South Gilpin Street, which was severely damaged in a traffic accident recently, may not be replaced until spring.
The new mast arm that held up the traffic signal located at the intersection was severely damaged when it was struck by an oversized load several weeks ago and was replaced with two wooden utility poles and a wire to support the traffic signals without the camera that is used to control traffic in the downtown area, said Ben White, borough manager, at Tuesday's Public Works Committee Meeting.
White said the replacement mast arm will not arrive for three months.
He said the entire downtown traffic signal project is on its 30-day review period before PennDOT will turn the system over to the borough for good.
"Any community or council members who are aware of any problems should call the borough office to report it so we can tell PennDOT," White said, adding that the new signals will have to be added to the borough's insurance.
Larry Chenoga, chairman of Public Works, said he's concerned about the cost if something should happen to any of the signals.
In other business:
• The H2O grant sanitary sewer projects are now in the restoration phase, White said.
"The contractor has completed his work by the Punxy Plaza and has been working on Horatio Street and still has to install another pipe in order to complete the South Main Street project," White said.
• The Community Center roof project began this week, White said, adding that he had been worried that it might not be completed this year before the weather changed but said it looks as if they will get it in before the weather turns.
• White said Public Works is preparing for fall leaf collection, which will probably begin at the end of October or the first week of November.
• Chenoga said there is a vacancy with the sewer vactor crew due to a recent resignation.
"We are hoping to fill that position quickly,'" Chenoga said, adding that council had an executive session prior to the committee meetings on Tuesday.
At the Legal and Finance Committee Meeting:
White said that he is working with all of the department heads to get their internal budgets completed for the borough and sewer department.
