Schall goes the distance, wins in Altoona

ALTOONA— Competing against some of the best competition Punxsutawney girls' track and field has faced all season Saturday in Altoona at the 62nd Annual West Central Coaches Invitational, senior Milea Schall proved she was one of the best.

Schall won the 3,200-meter run (11:39.48), giving the Punxsy its only champion at the event.

Punxsy competed against 55 schools, 17 from Class AAAA or AAA schools, with 38 Class AA school competing.

Schall also was a member of the 4x800 relay team, which finished in seventh place.

"Milea just continues doing what she's been doing all season," Punxsy coach Barry Young said. "She basically led the race from beginning to end. She did a great job."

Nicki Martz had the second best day among the Lady Chucks, placing third in the javelin (111-4) and seventh in the shot put (33-4).

"Nicki also had a great day placing in the shot put and javelin," Young said. "She is steadily improving at the right time of the year."

Two other Punxsy runners were also able to place.

Lauren McGarvey placed sixth in the 400 dash (63.37) and Shannon Byerly finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run (12:22).

Timi Shiock was the Lady Chucks top finisher in the field, where she placed eighth in the high jump (4-10).

Two relay teams also cracked the top eight.

The 4x800 squad, which consisted of Byerly, Alexis Young, Schall and Caro Feican, finished seventh (10:33.1).

The 4x400 relay team, featuring Kayla Cameron, Juliann Boddorf, Feican and McGarvey finished eighth (4:23.25).

"We had a lot of personal bests in this meet," Young said. "Which you like to see coming toward the end of the season."
