Say it isn’t so: Board takes action pertaining to start of school

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It’s hard to believe, but actions taken by the Punxsutawney Area School Board during its Monday meeting indicate that the start of the 2012-13 school year is just around the corner.

Monday, the board approved several purchases in the areas of food service and technology, including a combination (or combi) oven from U.S. Foods for $18,954.

During a previous meeting, Cafeteria Manger Denise Geist explained to the board that a combi-oven could cook several different items at once and at different intervals for different days. It also takes away the need for deep-frying foods.

Board member Bob Pascuzzo asked if, given the cost, the district was buying two combi-ovens. Business Manager Susan Robertson said no, the district was looking for a discount on two, but at this time is purchasing only one combi-oven to see how its serves the cafeteria department.

Under the financial portion of the board’s agenda, the board also approved the following purchase orders:
• Zeager Brothers, wood carpet for playgrounds, $5,317.56.

• Accent Electronic Systems, video encoder and software, under the CoStars contract for proposed upgrades to the camera system, which will also eliminate the need for an annual service contract (a savings of $9,400 per year), $19,072.

• Computer support, HP ProLiant server, $5,941.26.

• Trane, for proposed repairs to the high school cooling system,
$5,895.

• Triumph Learning, student workbooks for the middle school, $5,034.40.
• Spotts Music Center, instruments, $6,197.29.

• Carolina Biological, science supplies for the high school, $4,494.78.

• McGraw Hill, special education textbooks (with ACCESS funds), $69,841.93.

The board accepted the following resignations:
• Sandra Farbo, lunch monitor, effective Aug. 31.

• Michelle Ambler, SEIA, effective June 26.

• Jason Grusky, boys’ track and field coach.

• Mike Dickey, assistant football coach.

The board also approved the following hires:
• Robert Weaver, assistant football coach.

• Doug Craft, middle school cross country coach.

• Andrew Tygert, volunteer volleyball coach.

• Rick Graffius, volunteer girls’ tennis coach.

• Frank Bizousky, volunteer assistant football coach.

The board also approved the following items in Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe’s report:
• Second reading of recommended changes or addition to Policy 004 — Membership (revised) and Policy 249 — Bullying/Cyber-bullying (revised).

• Paying the necessary tuition for a Punxsy student to enroll in the agriculture program in the Marion Center School District for the 2012-13 school year.

This is a continuation of a request, which was granted last year.
• An agreement between the district and the American Red Cross for the 2012-13 school year.

Wolfe said this is so pool staff may offer classes and provide successful participants with Red Cross cards.

• Conference and field trips with a 8-1 vote, with board Vice-President Francis Molinaro dissenting.
