Sally Lou Whitesell, 85

Sally Lou Whitesell, 85, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late George Clarence and Maude Marie (Reesman) Hanley.

On April 9, 1944, she married William Lee Whitesell, Sr.; he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2000.

Sally knew what being a good mother and grandmother was all about; she enjoyed cookouts, making Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and just spending time with her family.

She also enjoyed wood crafts and getting out to eat or to go shopping.

Surviving relatives include seven children, Sally Anderson of Punxsutawney, Judy Vanhorn of North Tonawanda, N.Y., William Whitesell, Jr. and wife Sharon of Punxsutawney, Wanda Neal and husband Richard of Punxsutawney, Patty Schrock of Rochester, N.Y., Robert Whitesell and fiancee Andrea of Oxford, Ohio, and Sam Whitesell and wife Sherry of Johnstown; 13 grandchildren, Debbie Young and husband Ernie, Diana Richards, Rodney Parise and wife Jeanette, Samuel Parise, Tina Ferber and husband Daniel, William Whitesell III and wife Kim, Melissa Duplage and husband Steve, Edward Whitesell, Jason Neal and Stephanie Dorsey, Sammie Whitesell and wife Tamara, Jill Gibboney and husband Mike, Kara Whitesell and Samuel Whitesell; and 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Sam Hanley and wife Sara, Paul Hanley and wife Catherine, Robert Hanley and wife Barbara, Gilbert Hanley, George Hanley and wife Janeen, and Raymond Hanley and wife Darlene, all of Punxsutawney, and James Hanley of Boston, N.Y.; four sisters, Maxine Cooper, Mary Leonard and husband Donald of Curwensville, Jean Cipenetti of Punxsutawney, and Kathy Conrad and husband Richard of Punxsutawney.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hanley; a brother, Arnold Hanley; and two sons-in-law, Marlean Anderson and Thomas Schrock.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012.

Interment will be at Lakelawn Memorial Park.
