Robert W. Mayes, 69

Robert W. Mayes, 69, passed away on May 30, 2014, at Good Shepherd Hospice from his battle with cancer.

Born in Punxsutawney in 1944, he moved to Lakeland in 1986, where he worked as a heavy machinery mechanic and retired from FME.

After retiring, he took up gardening and created a beautiful landscape paradise where many have gathered to enjoy its beauty.

His other love was golf. He enjoyed playing with his buddies at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Mayes; sons John and Michael Mayes; daughters Lynn Tanner and Melissa Pittman; stepsons Ricky Anderson and Chip Johnston; stepdaughters Lynn Cranor and Joie Johnston; sister Mary Ellen Stahlman; brother Mervin Mayes; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted at Gentry Morrison Funeral Home at Serenity Gardens, 3350 Mall Hill Dr., Lakeland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice.
