Robert E. Bennett, 86, Rossiter, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at home.
He was born March 30, 1925, in Clymer, the son of the late Perry and Margaret (Shields) Bennett.
Jan. 12, 1946, he married Avanell Humble, who survives.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the former Rossiter Presbyterian Church. He served as a church elder, Sunday School teacher and former church treasurer.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was also a member of the American Legion of Rossiter and the Carpenters Union Local No. 2274 of Pittsburgh.
A retired carpenter, Mr. Bennett was a former employee of Punxsy Beef & Provision and the former owner of Central Personal Care Home and A&A Sunoco in Rossiter.
He was a life member of the Rossiter Fire Company, Disabled American Veterans and the Indiana County Republican Menâ€™s Club.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include three children, Lynn Bennett of Rossiter, Deborah Lunger and husband Rudy of Rossiter, and Patricia Bennett of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Christopher Flick and wife Kyleen, and Carrie Munro and husband Allen; two great-grandchildren, Cole Flick and Riley Flick; a sister, Mary Mae Craft of Prospect; three brothers, Perry (Buck) Bennett and wife Nancy of Ford City, George Bennett and wife Nancy of Mahaffey, and Richard Bennett and wife Charmaine of Rossiter; a brother-in-law, Robert Humble and wife Shirley of Cranberry; and his companion dog, Curly Q.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Bennett; a sister, Dora Sitosky; an infant sister, Sara Jane Bennett; and a son-in-law, Ralph Flick.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at the funeral home with Pastor Frank Torzok officiating.
Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Rossiter.
The family has suggested that memorials be made to the Presbyterian Church Flight Bag Fund in Mr. Bennettâ€™s memory.
