PUNXSUTAWNEY â Road construction throughout the Borough of Punxsutawney could create some delays when classes resume in the Punxsutawney Area School Board, according to District Transportation Director Cheryl Repik.
Repik told the school board Wednesday that she received an e-mail from Ben White, Punx-sutawney borough manager, about emergency repairs to a sanitary sewer line scheduled to begin Monday at the intersection of Pine and North Findley streets.
White wrote that traffic will be maintained in the intersection, which affects almost every school bus leaving the high school and middle school campuses in the morning â which is about the only way for buses to leave the campuses, Repik said.
The buses could travel down Sycamore Street, but it is difficult to turn left going toward town, she said. The buses cannot use Graffius Avenue due to the bridge construction.
Board members Bob Pascuzzo said Repik should contact the borough and ask if there could be some assistance from Punxsutawney Bourough Police in assisting the buses pulling out of Sycamore Street while the sewer work continues.
Repik said she would check with borough police regarding that situation.
In other business:
â˘ Repik said the board needed to make a decision on the districtâs bus accident procedures and whether or not it is considered to be a part of Policy 810. Former Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Frantz had the procedures added to the policy several years ago, she said.
Solicitor David Young said if the procedures were already made a part of a policy, then any changes or updates should be treated as additions to the policy.
Repik said she will present those procedures to the board to be read as a change to a policy during the September board meetings.
Also Wednesday, the board:
â˘ Approved the STA/Krise Bus Service drivers, vehicles and home buses; Tri-County Transportation drivers and vehicles; new bus stops; and new bus runs for a student for medical reasons.
â˘ Approved a purchase order for NCS Pearson-Success Maker license to be paid with Title I funds in the amount of $79,998; and to purchase a new seventh-grade reading textbook, âExpert 21,â published by Scholastic Books, at the request of Ranee Sikora, seventh-grade reading teacher.
â˘ Approved a purchase order for JKM Training to be used for training the special education staff at a cost of $6,069.
â˘ Approved the resignation of Gary Garzoni as assistant varsity football coach.
Board members suggested that the district should send Garzoni a letter of thanks for his many years of service as a coach.
â˘ Approved Jason Butler, Curwensville, as the new PAHS assistant football coach as recommended by Alan Nichol, the head varsity football coach.
â˘ Approved Ryan Hayden and Jeremy Long as volunteer soccer coaches.
â˘ Approved the resignations of Jason Jarbeck, special education instructional assistant, and Lori Willismson and Donna Palmer as van monitors.
â˘ Approved Jeanene Richardson and Susan Wydra as special education instructional assistants; Kim Vanyo and Marcella Stamler as van monitors; Debra Washburn, cafeteria staff; and Angel Heitzenrater as the middle school pool manager at $14 per hour.
â˘ Approved the disposal of 225 outdated (six to 10 year old) Apple laptop computers.
The district will be paid $8,615 by IGS Systems to handle the computers recycling.
â˘ Approved the disposal of elementary desks and chairs.
New desks had already been purchased and are ready for delivery.
Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said this is the final purchase of a desks/chair/ replacement cycle that was established several years ago.
The old desks and chairs will be given away to the students.
â˘ Approved the following mentors for new faculty members: Dawn Meko for Karen B. Young; Jill Derr for Deidre Martino; Angela Cesario for Rodney Thompson; and Kim McFetridge for Andrew Tygert.
â˘ Approved an agreement between the Punxsy and Marion Center districts for Title I Services.
â˘ Approved the conferences and field trips. Board Vice-President Francis Molinaro voted no.
