Richard T. Holmes, age 67, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014, at his residence in Erie, Pa. Born Jan. 2, 1947, in Florence, S.C., he was the son of the late Richard Holmes of Interlachen, Fla., and Margaret (Allison) Holmes of Punxsutawney.
Richard was a 1966 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969. He earned his bachelor's degree at IUP and his master's degree in public administration from Gannon University. Richard was the Energy Efficiency Manager at Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AECI) in Springfield, Missouri, until his retirement in 2012.
He was previously employed at Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) in Rochester, Minn., SIGECO in Evansville, Ind., and Penelec in Erie and Indiana, Pa.
He also served as the Director of the Lighting Research Center at the University of Missouri. Richard was an adjunct professor at Cardinal Stritch University in Rochester, Minn., and at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind. He was a BOC instructor in the states of Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Schneider) Holmes, whom he married in 1967. Richard and Janet have four children, Ethan Holmes, his wife, Becky, and their two daughters, Abbey and Olivia of Parma Heights, Ohio; Elisa Holmes, her fiancee', Jeremy Mifsud, and their son, Matthew, of Erie, Pa; Aaron Holmes and his wife, Joni, of Ft. Branch, Ind.; and Anne Tellers, her husband, Brian, and their daughter, Elizabeth, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Richard has one brother, James Holmes, of Indiana, Pa.
A funeral Mass was held on Friday, April 25, at St. Patrick Church, 130 East 4th St, with Msgr. Henry Kreigel as celebrant.
