Richard A. Srock, Jr., 63

September 4, 2013

Richard A. Srock, Jr., 63, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Richard was preceded in death by parents Richard, Sr. and Leah Margaret (Knarr) Srock of Troutville.

Born in DuBois on June 9, 1950, Richard grew up in Troutville and graduated from DuBois Area High School in 1968.

Richard lived with his parents until moving to Pittsburgh, where he brought great joy to the homes of his sisters Mary Maddox and Diane Davis until moving to Brick House at the campus of Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis, Pa. in 2004.

At Brick House, a group home, Richard lived with seven roommates and a kind and caring staff. He attended school, participated in field trips and regular campus sports and activities and developed many new friendships.

In the fall of 2009, Rich’s declining health and progressive Alzheimer’s disease required him to move to a medical facility on the AVS campus, where he was lovingly cared for by family and staff until his recent hospitalization.

Richard was an amazing person. He overcame the limitations of Down Syndrome to achieve many of his dreams. Rich enjoyed working, food, the Steelers and the Pirates, and making people laugh. Here’s how he described one of his passions:

"I love horses. I want to be someone riding through the wind…dreaming of smiles and hearing people cheer me on. I can sit on top of the saddle and be proud, with my head held high, just like a King on his throne."

In addition to his sisters, Richard will be remembered by nieces, Denise Knox of Pittsburgh and Diana Maddox of Rockledge Fla., and his nephew, James Maddox of DuBois, as well as their families, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

All who knew Richard loved his sense of humor and benefited greatly from his joy of life. He has been an inspiration to many and he will be missed.

Friends will be received on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Troutville, followed by a funeral service for Richard at 12:30 p.m., officiated by Pastor Barry Fillman.

Interment will follow at United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
