The Rev. J. Richard Hackenberry, 87

The Rev. J. Richard Hackenberry, 87, Summerville, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at home.

He was born June 23, 1923, in Lewistown, a son of the late Charles Elmer and Carrie E. Hackenberry.

Dec. 21, 1949, he married Joyce Vivian Klinger, who preceded him in death Jan. 26, 1998.

Rev. Hackenberry attended the Western Pennsylvania Conference of United Methodist Churches and served for 60 years in ministry, serving 33 churches in eight charges. After his retirement, he served five other churches.

In the Punxsutawney area, he was the minister at the Juneau United Methodist Charge, the Church of God in Emerickville, St. Mark’s Independent, Wellington Heights, Barton Chapel United Methodist and Coolspring Presbyterian.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Marsha Ann Rowles of Goshen, Ohio; a son, Roger Lee Hackenberry of Summerville; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Amos Hackenberry; and a sister, Dorothea E. Hackenberry, both of Lewistown.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Hackenberry; and four brothers, Howard, Russell, Elmer and Stanley Hackenberry.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Coolspring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Darr Briggs officiating.

Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
