Regular season ends on a high note
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks tennis team finished its regular season on a high note Thursday by defeating Brockway 9-0, capping a successful week that saw two team victories and a District IX doubles championship.
"All of the girls played well tonight," Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said. "It was a nice ending to a good season."
The No. 1 and No. 2 sin-gles contests were the closest of the evening, with Punxsy's Anna Monyak defeating Brittany Johnson 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Shaina Reddinger defeating Abigail Larson 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
"Brittany was a tough opponent for Anna, as was Abigail for Shaina," Graffius said.
Searra Wasicki was convincing for Punxsy in the No. 3 singles, defeating Cassandra Foradori 6-0, 6-0, and Lauren Wolfe defeated Brockway's Kristin Moore 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles.
In No. 5 singles, Jaelene Burkett played her first singles match for the Lady Chucks — a 6-4, 6-3 victory that lasted almost two hours.
"Jaelene had some very long rallies and moved quickly around the court to keep the ball in play," Graffius said. "She really wanted the win and played with that sort of determination."
In doubles action, Monyak and Reddinger — the pair that won the District-IX doubles title Tuesday — defeated Foradori and Larson 8-3.
Wolfe and Amber Ward followed suit by defeating Moore and Anna Brinkley 8-1, and Calena Spearing and Kylie Krise completed the sweep by defeating Gabby Bart and Shyanne Reddinger 7-2.
The No. 4 doubles match was conceded by Brockway on account of darkness.
"We were happy to host Brockway and glad the weather cooperated for us to get in our final match," Graffius said.
Punxsy's busy schedule continues Monday when the Lady Chucks travel to Benzinger Park in St. Marys to take on DuBois for the team district title beginning at 2:30 p.m.
