Raymond A. Smochek, 84, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Hillsdale Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hillsdale, Pa.
He was born Oct. 1, 1927, in Mahaffey, a son of the late Frank and Rose (Mrozek) Smochek.
On Oct. 3, 1949, he married Anna (Gresock) Smochek, who survives, and they were married for 62 years.
He was the last remaining member of his family.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Smochek worked for Pittsburgh Steel in Homestead, Beckwith Machine Shop in Clearfield, Jack Rainy Construction in Mahaffey, T.D. Bross Electric in Hartford, Conn., Femco Machine in Punxsutawney and Benjamin Coal Company. He retired from Jefferson Machine Company of Punxsutawney in 1989.
He belonged to the I.B.E.W. Union and the V.F.W. Post 8709 of Mahaffey, Pa.
Mr. Smochek belonged to the Saints Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.
He was a devoted Catholic, husband, father and grandfather.
He loved gardening, fishing, hunting, playing guitar and singing.
He was loved by all and will be missed greatly.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four sons and three daughters, Raymond T. Smochek and wife Susan of Slippery Rock, Paul E. Smochek and wife Beth Ann of Glen Campbell, Stanley J. Smochek and wife Julie of Punxsutawney, Richard M. Smochek and wife Sharon of Punxsutawney, Mary Ann Bell and husband Greg of Mahaffey, Donna Marie Little and husband Jeffery of Mahaffey, and Susan Kathleen Bloxdorf and husband Brett of Mahaffey; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters, Frank, Chester, Edward and William Smochek, Jennie Boras, Anna Beyer, Agnes Jackson, Frances Fahnestack, Daisy Kiczenski, Sophia Wasik and Amy Bentley.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Saints Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church with Monsignor Joseph Riccardo officiating.
Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in Mr. Smocheckâ€™s memory, may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society or to the SS.C.D. School.
