Rails-to-Trails to host Family Fun and Picnic Day
VALIER — The Punxsutawney Rails-to-Trails Association will be holding its 2nd Annual Mahoning Shadow Trail Family Fun and Picnic Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The event is free and will be held at the Fordham Trailhead Pavilion in Valier.
Susan Wolfe, secretary of the Rails-to-Trails Association, said that this will be the perfect event for some family fun.
"We thought this particular weekend would be good because a lot of families will be back from vacation, and this is a chance for families to have one last good time before school starts up," said Wolfe.
Rails-to-Trails will be offering hot dogs, chips and water at the pavilion, and those who stop by can also register to win door prizes.
Wolfe said that the door prizes will come from various bicycle shops around the area.
Fezell's County Market will be donating refreshments.
Wolfe said that this is the Rails-to-Trails’ way of giving back to the community.
"Last year, we had approximately 60 people attend, and we hope to have more this year," she said.
People who attend will also have a chance to meet various Rails-to-Trails members who will answer questions about the trail.
According to Wolfe, people can also look through scrapbooks and see how much the organization has done in the past to beautify and provide this resource.
"I like the trail, because after years of biking in town with traffic, it’s nice to get on the trail and just deal with nature," said Wolfe.
Anyone wishing to bring a dog to the event may do so, Wolfe said, as long as the dog remains on a leash.
She added that the organization has been quite busy this summer.
"We have been preoccupied with clean-up, flood damage, drainage issues and repairing the trail surface," said Wolfe.
Rails-to-Trails invites people of all ages to come out and enjoy the trail.
