Punxsy/SS.C.D. 6th-grade wins ECC Tourney, perfect 15-0

ST. MARYS – The distant future of the Punxsy girls' basketball program looks to be promising. Last weekend, the sixth-grade Punxsy/SS.C.D. squad kept its perfect season mark by sweeping three games with a 27-17 victory over Johnsonburg in the championship contest to win the Elk County Catholic Tournament in St. Marys.

Kate Horner led the team which is now 15-0 on the season with 14 points. Cassidy Reed hit for five points, while Emily Griebel and Kylee Shoemaker both added four points apiece.

In the title contest, Punxsy claimed the first two quarters with a 9-4 margin and 10-6 second frame for 19-10 intermission tally.

The two teams' scoring slowed down in the third quarter with Punxsy edging out a 4-3 summary for a 10-point lead, 23-13. Both teams netted four points apiece in the last frame to give Punxsy the tournament title, 27-17.

In game one of the ECC Tournament, Punxsy took care of the host ECC with ease, 31-7. Horner hit for double figures with 10 points to go with five steals and three assists. Shoemaker added six points and five rebounds. Bailey Jones and Ally Whitman hit the boards with eight and six to their credits. Megan Ray contributed two free throws, four rebounds and three steals. Kassidy Graham rounded out the game with three caroms, two assists and two points.

Punxsy raced past St. Marys, 31-4, in the second round of the ECC Tourney. Griebel had the big game with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Reed chipped in six points and six rebounds.

In other recent games played:

• Punxsy 41, Brockway 4

Punxsy rolled Brockway in big fashion, 41-4, at Brockway on Sept. 18. Horner led the scorers with 10 points. Griebel had seven points and five boards. Reed and Shoemaker hit for six points apiece, with Jones pulling is seven rebounds. Ray added four points, five boards and three assists.

• Punxsy 30, DuBois Central 13

Another road game and another win. Punxsy had no trouble prevailing over DuBois Central by a 30-13 final on Sept. 22. Horner paced the way with 10 points and seven steals. Reed had six points, while Graham also netted six points, three rebounds and three steals. Shoemaker made four points, and Jones grabbed five rebounds.

• Punxsy 26, North Clarion Catholic 5

Short rest did not prevent Punxsy from trouncing another foe in a 26-5 victory over North Clarion Catholic on Sept. 23 in Punxsy. Griebel claimed top honors with eight points while swiping two passes. Horner had six points, four caroms, four assists and four steals. Abby Gemmell chipped in four points and two boards, with Graham adding two points and two rebounds.

• Punxsy 26, DuBois Central 10

In a home contest, Punxsy took away a win over DuBois Central for the second time in four days, 26-10, on Sept. 26. Horner netted the top scoring amount with 10 points and five steals. Jones grabbed nine rebounds. Griebel added four points and three assists, and Ray four points and two rebounds.

Punxsy started October the same as it finished September. The sixth-graders defeated Brockway, 31-4, on Oct. 1. Horner led with seven points, with both Jones and Graham having six apiece. Reed added four points, three rebounds and two assists.

• Punxsy 29, Ridgway 5

Before going to the ECC Tournament, Punxsy recorded one more win, a 29-5 victory over Ridgway at home on Oct. 3.

Horner paced the attack with 13 points, four steals and three assists.

Shoemaker grabbed six boards to go with four points. Griebel and Graham both added four points. Ray hauled in eight rebounds, with Reed and Whitman having five caroms.
