Punxsy's squad shows improvement in St. Marys

August 30, 2011

ST. MARYS — St. Marys' girls' tennis team defeated Punxsy, 7-2, in Tuesday's match in St. Marys, one that Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said was closer than the score indicated.

Punxsy earned wins in two of the nine matches, No. 1 singles and No. 4 doubles.

In the No. 1 singles, Punxsy's Anna Monyak defeated Mary Rosman 6-4, 6-2.

"Anna did a very good job placing the ball in No. 1 singles," Graffius said of her player's performance.

In the No. 4 doubles, Punxsy's team consisting of Kylie Krise and Calena Spearing defeated St. Marys' Emily Challingsworth and Megan McCoy, 8-1, for Punxsy's second point.

Despite the fact that Punxsy had only two points in the final tally, Graffius said there were several other matches that were "very close and could have gone either way."

In No. 3 singles, Searra Wasicki fell 4-6, 5-7 to Aubrey Wiesner. Wasicki went back and forth with Wiesner, forcing deuce on more than one occasion and nearly forcing a set tie-breaker.

"Searra had some excel-lent rallies in her singles match," Graffius said.

In the No. 1 doubles, another that Graffius said could have gone either way, Monyak and Shaina Reddinger fell to Rosman and Amy Orr, 6-8.

The other close match was in the No. 3 doubles where Punxsy's Tori Brooks and Erin Long came up just short against Marta Vega and Danielle McCoy, also 6-8.

Reddinger, Lauren Wolfe and Amber Ward, who was playing in her first varsity singles' match, also played for Punxsy.

Reddinger lost to Orr (0-6, 1-6), Wolfe to Chelsea Agosti (3-6, 2-6) and Ward to Vega (1-6, 0-6).

Wasicki and Wolfe also put up a good fight against Wiesner and Agosti in No. 2 doubles but fell short, 3-8.

Laura Chelgren and Karlee Wingard also participated in an exhibition match, defeating St. Marys' Rachel Ehrensberger and Becky Hanes, 8-2.

Graffius liked what she saw from her girls on the court Tuesday.

"The girls are getting more confident in their play," she said. "We had some close matches, and it's always a challenge to play on the St. Marys' courts because they are not hard surfaces like ours."

Punxsy's next match will be its first at home, Thursday at 3:30 against Bradford.
