DuBOIS – For the second time this fall, the Punxsy girls' tennis claimed a District IX runner-up. Amber Ward and Lauren Wolfe teamed up for a second place finish in the double championships held in DuBois on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening round, Ward and Wolfe received a bye into round two. The other Punxsy double entree of Kylie Krise and Jaelene Burkett picked up first round victory. The Krise/Burkett pair claimed a 10-3 pro-set win over the Bradford duo of Nicole Henderson and Ashley Stoltz.

The Krise/Burkett team had the unfortunate draw of the district's top pair of Alisha Torretti and Christina Torretti of DuBois in the second round. The Toretti sisters prevailed in straight sets, 1-6 and 1-6.

On the other side of the bracket, the Ward/Wolfe pairing faced the other DuBois doubles of Alaina Anand and Michelle Wenerd. The Punxsy pair blistered the courts with a 6-1 first set win before claiming the win in a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaking victory.

It was then onto the finals where Ward/Wolfe met the Lady Beavers' Torretti sisters. During the finals first set, the Lady Chucks top doubles team took a 3-1 lead but could not hold serve from there to drop the next five games to fall 3-6.

The Torretti sisters followed with a 2-6 second set to give the DuBois duo the straight sets victory over Ward/Wolfe.

"They played an awesome match," explained Punxsy coach Rose Graffius. "Many of their games were at deuce. They had excellent net play and great base lineshots."
