BELLEFONTE — After only having five bouts on the year through last Friday, Punxsy doubled its wrestling match total in a single day.
Last Saturday, the Chucks took part in the Bellefonte Red Raider Rumble.
Punxsy claimed two wins in five team matches as it defeated Crestwood (39-32) and State College (38-34).
In the other action of the all-day event, Punxsy dropped decisions to Hazleton (51-22), Downingtown (45-27) and Exeter (49-15).
"Over the weekend, we showed a lot of improvement, especially on our feet," noted Chucks head coach Eric Eddy. "We won against Crestwood and State College where we stepped up our level of performance to match theirs."
Eddy continued about the team performance, "We finally showed on the mat what we worked on in the (wrestling) room. They performed what they were taught to do."
A trio of Chucks, Eli Lambiotte (106), Joel Bowers (120) and Kaleb Young (126), produced perfect 5-0 days.
Lambiotte continued to come on strong of late. The lightweight recorded three falls to go with a pair of decisions in his wins.
Young had just as strong bouts as his classmate. The first-year grappler had three pins of his own, while adding a tech fall and one decision.
Bowers contributed a pair of falls in his five matches.
The junior chipped in a tech fall and two decisions to round out his day.
Josh Shuckers (132) and Perry Arrington (138) each posted three wins, while Keegan Fischer (160) and Travis Perry (170) both powered to two victories.
Brandon Wingert and Jeff Bottenhorn chipped in one win on their Saturday action.
"We really had improved performances out of all of our guys," added Eddy.
Against Crestwood, Punxsy trailed 21-15 after seven weight classes.
Lambiotte evened the scoreboard at 21 when he pinned Crestwood's Dylan Miale in 3:07. At 111, Andrew Bullers was given a forfeit to put the Chucks ahead, 27-21, for good.
Bowers and Young followed with back-to-back falls in quick fashion.
Bowers won the 120 bout over Seth Korch in 1:44.
Young didn't need nearly that long to pin 126-pound Josh Prezkop in only 26 seconds.
Arrington had the final win for the Chucks in the final three bouts with his own pin in 2:47.
Following an opening match fall, State College edged in front, 6-0 over Punxsy.
The Chucks answered with three-straight wins for a lead, 15-6, they would not give up the rest of the match.
At 170, Fischer started the run with a 10-4 decision over the Little Lions' Dave Fremberg.
Perry (182) and Brandon Wingert (195) produced six-point pins as the two other Punxsy wins of the three in a row.
Bowers produced the other pin of the match against State College, with Young having a tech fall. Lambiotte and Arrington recorded decision wins in the 38-34 Punxsy victory.
The Chucks return to action for their only two-day event of the regular season. On Friday and Saturday, Punxsy will take part in the New Oxford Tournament.View more articles in:
