Punxsy wins big in opening round, 19-2

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's 13- and 14-year old VFW Teener League All- Stars scored six runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth to jump out to a 10-0 lead over Schuylkill County West All-Stars and went on to win, 19-2, in its opening game of the state tournament Friday night in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy's Brycen Paulinellie led off the top of the first inning with a single, and T.J. Petro followed with an infield single.

Ruben Taylor walked to load the bases, and Paulinellie scored on an RBI single by Dakota Byers.

Brandon Blose cleared the bases with a three-RBI double. Blose scored on a single by Doug Pollack, and Pollack scored when Matt Griffiths reached base on an error, giving Punxsy a 6-0 lead.

Punxsy added four more runs in the second, highlighted by Byers' one-out triple to push its lead to 10 and scored one more in the third on an RBI single by Byers.

Paulinellie, who started the game for Punxsy, allowed just one run on three hits and struck out four to earn the win.

He was relieved by Ethan Ambler, who also allowed one run over two innings.

Punxsy added five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Petro double.
Punxsy also scored three in the fifth and final inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Paulinellie which scored Tyler Geer and Doug Pollack.

With the win, Punxsy advances in the winners bracket and will play against Altoona Reliance at 1 p.m. today at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy's game was the fourth on a full slate for the opening day of the VFW state tournament.

In the opening game of the tournament, played at 10 a.m. Friday, Mount Union defeated Holidaysburg, 27-17, to advance in the winners' bracket.

Mount Union scored 10 runs in the third inning and added nine more in the seventh to put the game away.

Quinton Whitsel led the way offensively for Mount Union, going 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs.

In the 1 p.m. game, Altoona Reliance edged out Stammel, 7-6.

Nick Thomas had a triple for Altoona.

In the 4 p.m. game, Schuylkill East scored seven runs on five hits in the fourth inning to jump out to a 9-2 lead.

Clearfield scored five in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on base but was unable to score any more runs. Schuylkill won 9-7.
