PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' tennis team opened its home schedule for the 2011 season by blanking Bradford's squad, 9-0, Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

In the No. 1 singles category, Punxsy's Anna Monyak handled hard-hitting Emily Hardy's serves and defeated her 6-2, 6-3 to earn Punxsy's first point in a match that contained several close games that frequently went to multiple deuces.

In the No. 2 singles, Shaina Reddinger defeated Brad-ford's Amina Sosic handily, 6-1, 6-2.

In No. 3 singles, Punxsy's Searra Wasicki kept Brad- ford's Colleen Douglas off the board, beating her 6-0, 6-0.

In No. 4 singles, Lauren Wolfe defeated Bradford's Alyssa McGrew 6-3, 6-3.

And in No. 5 singles, played at the West End courts, Calena Spearing defeated Zowe Orzceck, 6-1, 6-0 to complete Punxsy's singles sweep.

"After Tuesday's close match, the girls really wanted a win under their belts," head coach Rose Graffius said. "So, across the board, in all matches, they each played with determination — enough to bring home that win."

In the doubles category, Punxsy's squad also put up impressive numbers.

In No. 1 doubles, Wasicki and Wolfe defeated Douglas and Sara James in a very close 8-6 match.

In No. 2 doubles, Punxsy's Amber Ward and Kylie Krise defeated Nicole Henderson and Skye Graves, 8-2.

In No. 3 doubles, Lady Chucks Laura Chelgren and Erin Long defeated Kellly Siffrinn and Danby Kim, 8-4, and Karlee Wingard and Tori Brooks defeated Katelyn Clark and Mary Siepierski, 8-0, to complete the full-match sweep for Punxsy.

"A couple of new doubles teams were put out on the courts tonight," Graffius said. "They really did a nice job communicating with each other and working together."

Overall, Graffius was thrilled for her girls' first victory of the season.

"This was a nice victory for the girls," she said. "They played well and did what they were supposed to do in order to secure that first win of the season."

The teams also held two exhibition matches. In the first, Jaelene Burkett and Sydney Jekielek of Punxsy defeated Amelia Fowler and Mary Schroll, 8-2, and in the second, Shauna Wood fell to Bradford's Alyssa McGrew.

Punxsy's next match is scheduled for next Tuesday against Johnsonburg in Punxsutawney. Punxsy also travels to Elk County next Thursday.
