PUNXSUTAWNEY — The eighth-grade Lady Chucks basketball team put up 19 points in the first quarter of Thursday's game against DuBois Central Catholic and led 27-6 at halftime, cruising to a 35-10 win in Punxsutawney.
Six different Lady Chucks put points on the board, led by Emma White with 11.
Beth Barnett, Claire Smith and Ivy Ferko each had six points, while MiKeelee Brink added four, and Hope Bridge chipped in with two.
Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson was very pleased with his girls' performance.
"The girls played very well," he said. "These girls are very unselfish and made good passes that led to easy hoops for us. The defense was great all night, as well."
In the seventh-grade game, Punxsy rallied at the beginning of the fourth quarter to pull within three points, but ultimately was defeated by DCC, 35-19. Punxsy head coach Darrin Kriebel was quick to point out that his girls played much better than the score indicated, though.
"What a very competitive, entertaining and well-played seventh-grade girls' basketball game," he said. "The final score is no indication of how close this game actually was. Late-game foul trouble and turnovers led to several lay-ups, eventually sealing our fate."
Kriebel said Thursday's game was the first time the girls trailed late, and he liked the way they responded to the challenge.
"I was exceptionally pleased with the way they fought back and made a game for themselves," he said. "They never got down or stopped playing hard, which will be very key as they enter the midpoint of their season."
Both teams will host St. Marys Monday with the seventh-grade tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.View more articles in:
