PUNXSUTAWNEY — Putting an exclamation mark at the end of the successful 2012 campaign, Punxsy spiked DuBois Central in the regular season finale. On Senior Night, the Lady Chucks coasted into the District IX playoffs over the Lady Cardinals, 3-0, with games of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-11.

"The team kept up their intensity well during this match and played well," commented Punxsy head coach Heather Good. "It was a good game for Shayla (Brink), Chelsea (Engeholm) and Sydney (Weaver) to go out on our home court."

Brink, Engeholm and Weaver helped the Lady Chucks to a solid 13-5 regular season and will enter the District IX AA playoffs as the second seed. Punxsy will host third seed Clearfield on Tuesday night starting at 6:30 p.m. in the semi-finals. Top seed Bradford hosts the winner of #5 Karns City-#4 Cranberry game. The championship match will be played at St. Marys on Thursday.

"The girls are really excited about getting started on the post-season. It's going to be a tough road, but we believe we can do it," added Good.

Senior Brink paced the Punxsy front line with nine kills, hit .375 and dug three balls. Weaver produced six kills, hit .545, blocked 2.5 attacks and had six digs. Engeholm rounded out the senior trio with six digs.

Punxsy continued to build the lead to as many as 16 points, 19-3, on a Sydney Phillips ace. The game one final turned out to be the same margin on a combo block by Weaver and Gallina of 25-9.

Weaver killed the first two points of the second contest, and the team put eight of the first 10 points on the board, 8-2. DCC was able to get to within four points, 12-8, before Punxsy added five-straight for a 17-8 tally. Brink wrapped up game two a few minutes later with a kill and 25-11 final.

The third and final contest started very familiar with the first four points to the home team. On a Brink hit, Punxsy made it a seven-point margin, 9-2, and kept the difference no less than seven. States finished off the Lady Cardinals with her fifth kill of the night for the 25-11 win and sweep.

The Lady Chucks junior varsity squad had its own two-game sweep, 25-9 and 25-6.

"The girls really went out with a bang tonight!" exclaimed JV coach Tabi Bowers. "It was a great game to end our season on, and I'm so proud of the progress that they all made this season.  Tonight we made great decisions and kept up the intensity well."
