Punxsy misses playoffs for first time under Reitz

DUBOIS — For the first time in Randy Reitz's 10-year tenure as Punxsy girls' basketball head coach, the Lady Chucks will not enter the postseason.

Punxsy — which won five-straight District IX Class AAA titles from 2001-2006 and was the district runner-up three of the next four seasons — decided to not join the playoff crowd this year prior to a 43-37 loss to DuBois Friday night.

The Lady Chucks slumped to 4-15 on the season with the defeat.

"We didn't have enough wins. We set a goal of what we wanted to achieve," Reitz said. "We'd like to have a better season than what we did, but it wasn't for a lack of effort or hustle. We just couldn't get any breaks or bounces to go our way."

Friday, Punxsy stayed with DuBois (11-7) during a defensive-minded District IX League game, but the Lady Beavers completed the season sweep. Punxsy trailed 37-34 during the waning moments of the game, but a banked-in three-pointer and reverse layup by senior Jeri Watson on DuBois' next two possessions were the separating factors late.

"Both teams played hard and played good defense. It was a well played game," Reitz said. "They hit a couple key shots down the stretch."

Punxsy's Shawnna Crago led all girls in scoring with 14 points, and she added seven rebounds. Alex Magill had seven points, and both Jenna Reitz and Parris Kernich tallied six points.

Reitz went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and had four assists.

Punxsy had only 12 turnovers in the game.

Leading DuBois in scoring was Lindsey Obremski, who totaled nine points. Watson and Casey Wilcox added eight points each.

A year after nearly upsetting St. Marys and Kayla Hoohuli in the 2010 District IX Class AAA Championship Game, Punxsy will be on the outside look into the playoffs this year.

But coach Reitz said his team still has something to play for next week, when Punxsy visits A-C Valley Monday, hosts Penn Cambria Tuesday and travels to Bradford next Friday.

"We're going to play with pride and play the way we always approach the game," he said. "We're going to play hard and do the things that hopefully we need to do to come up with some wins."
