Punxsy JV girls improve to 5-6

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior-varsity girls' basketball team's 6-0 first quarter was the difference during a low scoring affair with Bradford Friday, as the Lady Chucks improved to 5-6 with a 20-13 victory.

Punxsy led 11-5 at halftime before pulling away with a 7-3 third quarter.

Both Emily Horner and Ashley Reitz led the Lady Chucks with seven points. Emily Reitz added four points.

Punxsy will return to the court when it hosts Ligonier Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

St. Marys 39, Punxsy 33

ST. MARYS — The Punxsy girls' basketball fell behind 13-8 after one quarter and trailed by six points entering the fourth quarter of a 39-33 loss to St. Marys Jan. 17.

Punxsy was led by Emily Horner, who scored 14 points, including eight by halftime. Mary Sloniger added eight points, and Alison Jones managed seven points.

DeAnna Yost tallied a team-best 18 points for St. Marys.

Hollidaysburg 56, Punxsy 15

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Hollidaysburg dominated every quarter while registering a 56-15 victory over the Punxsy JV girls' basketball team Jan. 14.

The Lady Golden Tigers led 11-1 after the first quarter, 28-5 entering halftime and were ahead 48-13 going into the fourth quarter.

Hollidaysburg nailed seven three-pointers in the game.

Emily Horner had a team-best six points for Punxsy, and both Emily Reitz and Alison Jones scored four points.

Michele Muir scored 15 points, and Susie Ellis had 11 points for Hollidaysburg.

Brookville 23, Punxsy 10

BROOKVILLE — The Punxsy JV girls' basketball team didn't score more than four points during any quarter of a 23-10 loss Jan. 6 at Brookville.

Brookville raced out to an 11-1 lead after one quarter and was ahead 14-3 at halftime.

Mary Sloniger scored four points to pace Punxsy, and Johnna Depp had three.

Aisha Newsome scored a team-best eight points for Brookville.

Punxsy 30, DuBois Central Catholic 22

DUBOIS — Stingy defense during the first three quarters allowed the Lady Chucks to down DCC Jan. 4, 30-22.

Punxsy surrendered just 12 points through the first three quarters while taking a 18-12 lead entering the final frame.

It outscored DCC 9-4 in the first quarter and was ahead 14-6 by halftime.

Freshman Ashley Reitz had a huge game, scoring nearly half of her team's points. Reitz had 14 points, including nine by halftime.

Both Mary Sloniger and Emily Horner added six points, and DCC was led by Maria French's eight points.
