PUNXSUTAWNEY â€“ In the latest edition of the Route 36 Rivalry, the red and white team from the south breezed its way to the winnerâ€™s circle.
The Punxsy girls basketball blistered Brookville with its relentless defense and balanced scoring in a 63-27 romp.
â€śDefensive pressure,â€ť bluntly said Punxsy coach Randy Reitz. â€śThe kids are relentless. They play hard four quarters for 32 minutes.â€ť
Reitz continued, â€śWeâ€™re deep and we bring in one (player) in after another to keep that pressure on and wear teams down.â€ť
The Lady Raiders (2-2) failed to connect on a long-range basket the entire night. The Punxsy defense held Brookville to 4 of 18 from the floor and forced 10 turnovers in the key first half.
Punxsy (2-2) saw nine of the its 10 girls dressed put points on the board.
Sophomore Jensen Constantino netted a game-high 12 points along with various key rebounds.
Taylor Newcome was the other Lady Chuck in double digits with 10.
Ally Fye posted her highest offensive output in four contests with nine points.
Shaina Painter hit for eight points including a rare four-point play. Emily Horner, Anna Horner and Nicole DiPietro all added six points apiece.
Amber Ward banked in three tallies of her own. Point guard Ashley Reitz made three foul shots to go with handing out six assists.
Alyssa Reitz did not score but dished out six helpers herself.
â€śI hope for scoring balance every game,â€ť noted the Punxsy coach. â€śIt makes it tough for the other team to defend against when anyone can score.â€ť
The night started with Constantino and Emily Horner laying in a bucket apiece in the opening three minutes and the home team would never trail.
Brookville pulled to within 6-4 at 4:42 in the first quarter but would get no closer the rest of the night.
Punxsy work to an 11-7 lead after the frame as it was just getting warmed up.
After an opening foul shot by Lanae Newsome in the first 20 seconds of the second quarter, the Lady Raiders were held scoreless for the next four minutes and would make just one of seven attempts for the quarter.
Punxsy turned up its motor on the offensive end.
A Fye conventional three-point play on a hook shot in the lane started the dominate second eight minutes.
The Lady Chucks saw four different players net baskets in the next six minutes including a second Fye layup to break open the contest, 22-10.
Painter kept the momentum going when she drained a triple and completed a four-point play to extend the margin to 26-10 with 49 ticks left in the half.
Anna Horner put her name in the scoring column to punctuate the deciding quarter with a trey seconds before the buzzer sounded.
The Horner three-pointer put an exclamation point on the quarter, 20-4 in Punxsyâ€™s favor, and half, 31-11.
The Lady Chucks never let the Lady Raiders get into any rhythm and continued its defensive play in the third quarter.
Brookville missed its opening four attempts from the floor and turned the ball over three more trips in the opening three minutes of the third quarter.
Punxsy took advantage with a Newcome three-pointer 48 seconds in as part of a 10-0 start to the frame for a 41-11 tally.
The Lady Chucks went on to outscore the visitors, 8-6, in the final four-plus minutes of the third to take the stanza, 18-6.
Punxsy made it four quarters in its favor with a 14-10 final quarter and eventual, 63-27, going away victory.
â€śWe caught Brookville on an off night on the offensive end,â€ť commented Reitz. â€śThey have some very good athletes on that team.â€ť
On the night, it seemed as though every rebound went into a Punxsy set of hands.
â€śI feel we did a good job on the boards. Offensively we ran the floor well and made better decisions with the basketball, â€ś concluded the Punxsy leader.
For Brookville, Karly Reinsel finished with four buckets and eight points to pace the visitors' effort.
Lanae Newsome chipped in six points and her sister, Aisha Newsome had three points as the only other Lady Raider players with more than two points.
The junior varsity Lady Chucks started the night off strong for the second time this week.
Punxsy outscored Brookville by 10 points in the second quarter, 14-4, on its way to a 41-29 win.
Brookville did win the second half by a slight 15-13 margin but it was not nearly enough.
Center Hope Bridge continued to lead the scoring with eight baskets for 16 points. Bridge made 12 of her points in the deciding first half.
Emma White also produced double figures with 11 points including a three-pointer. Ward finished with nine points of her own in three quarters of work.
Ivy Ferko had four points and Claire Smith a free throw to finish the JV scoring.
Brenna Dworek and Elaina Powell were the top point producers for the JV Lady Raiders with nine points apiece, respectively.
Punxsy will head to the road for its next contest over the mountain.
The Lady Chucks will face the Lady Bison of Clearfield on Monday night starting at 6 p.m.View more articles in:
