CLEARFIELD — The previously undefeated Punxsy 13- and 14-year old Teener League All-Stars are undefeated no more after a 2-1 loss in eight innings to Clearfield Monday night in Clearfield.

"There was just really good pitching the whole way through," Punxsy coach Doug Byers said. "That pretty much sums up the whole game."

Thomas Summers pitched a complete game for Clearfield, allowing just one run on five hits to earn the win.

Dakota Byers pitched six strong innings for Punxsy, allowing one run on four hits. Byers also struck out six Clearfield hitters.

Matt Griffith relieved Byers in the seventh inning, and allowed one run on three hits.

Clearfield scored its run off Griffith in the bottom of the eighth when Summers doubled and scored on a walk-off single by Josh Sarbera.

With the loss, Punxsy and Clearfield are now tied for first place in the round-robin event, but Punxsy holds the advantage if the two teams finish with the same record, as the tie-breaker would be run differential.

Punxsy defeated Clearfield 6-2 last Monday in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy scored its only run in the top of the first to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Byers singled and scored on an RBI-double by Brandon Blose.

Summers settled in from that point forward and only allowed four hits over the next seven innings.

Blose singled again in the fourth inning, making him Punxsy's only player to have more than one hit.

Keeston Perry, Doug Pollack and Ethan Ambler each singled for Punxsy.

Punxsy's next game is Wednesday in Curwensville, which Punxsy defeated 11-4 last Wednesday.

Wednesday's game holds more weight now, as a loss would threaten its chances of winning the Area 6 tournament. Regardless, Punxsy will advance to the State Tournament, as it will be the host, July 29-Aug. 1.

Punxsy concludes the Area 6 tournament with a home game Friday against Philipsburg.
