Punxsy falls to Harborcreek in extra innings, 6-5

July 23, 2011

EDINBORO — Punxsy's 10- and 11-year old Little League Softball All-Stars opened its Section 1 tournament Thursday with a 6-5 loss in eight innings at the hands of Harborcreek in Edinboro.

Punxsy automatically won the District 10 bid, because there were no other 10- and 11-year old All-Star teams in the district.

The two teams combined for seven of the 11 total runs in the eighth inning alone.

Punxsy scored three runs in the top half of the eighth inning, but was unable to control the Harborcreek bats, allowing them to score four in the bottom half of the frame to win.

Punxsy's offense was led by Kally Graham, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, and Heather States, who was 2-for-2.

Punxsy received a strong pitchng performance from Kylee Lingenfelter, who pitched seven full innings, allowed two runs on just one hit, allowed four walks and struck out 17 Harborcreek hitters.

Clara Stephens was credited with the loss, after pitching the eighth inning and allowing four runs on two hits, walking five and striking out one.

Midori Bridgest also went 1-for-4 with a run, and Faith Dehner added a hit of her own.

Punxsy's next game is this afternoon at 1 p.m. against Conneaut Valley game, which lost 19-8 to Harborcreek Friday.

The winner of today's game moves on to play Sunday, and the loser is eliminated from the tournament.

The Section 1 tournament unfolds quickly, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. and the if necessary game scheduled for Monday.

Punxsy would need wins the next three consecutive days to win the Section 1 title and advance to the state tournament hosted by Nantitoke July 29-Aug. 2.
