Punxsy eliminated at the hands of Brookville, 15-14
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite a 7-2 lead at the end of the three innings, the Punxsutawney Minor League baseball All-Stars were eliminated from the tournament Sunday after a 15-14 loss to Brookville. A late push by Brookville led the team to victory, as it scored thirteen runs in the final two innings.
"They were hitting the ball, finding the gaps and putting the ball in play," Punxsy manager Eric Britton said. "It just snowballed on us."
Punxsy's offense was led by Derek Huey who hit a triple with the bases loaded in the sixth. Another star for Punxsy's offense was Logan Johnston, who hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth.
Punxsy gained an early lead as it scored a run after a walk and two fielder's choices. Austin Ewing recorded an RBI in the first inning.
But it was the third inning that gave Punxsy a larger lead. Batting around the lineup during the inning, Punxsy added six runs. By the middle of the third, the Punxsy All-Stars led 7-0.
Brookville scored its first runs during the bottom of the third, as Punxsy gave up two unearned runs on two errors.
The fourth and the fifth inning were Brookville's strongest.
During both innings, Brookville batted through their order but were able to total only three doubles. The rest of the runs were earned by singles and errors committed by Punxsy's defense.
During the bottom of the sixth, Punxsy tried to make a comeback, recording six runs, highlighted by Derek Huey's triple and three RBIs. Willie Hoover also hit a double during the inning.
Punxsy ended the game with runners on first and second, unable to secure the comeback victory.
"The boys never gave up," Britton said. "It was a challenging game, but the kids battled back. Both teams got down, and both teams battled back. It was a tough loss for us; it was a game that was definitely winnable."
