PUNXSUTAWNEY — After opening its season 2-0 and finishing fourth in the Bolton Tournament in State College, Punxsy's boys' golf team lost its first match by just three strokes, 162-165, against DuBois Monday afternoon at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

Punxsy's head coach Josh Conrad said his team's effort wasn't a poor one, they just went up against a tough opponent.

"We played well, but DuBois played better," Conrad said. "A 162 is an excellent score here at Punxsy's course. We only shot better than that once last year, and last week we shot a 165 to win. They're definitely a good team."

Punxsy's Micky DeChurch was the tournament's low-scorer, shooting a 38 — just one stroke over par for the course — to best DuBois' David Urbassik's 39 by one stroke.

Brandon Mancuso came in with the second lowest score for Punxsy in the nine-hole tournament, shooting a 41, which was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four sixth hole.

Punxsy (2-1) counted the four lowest scores from the team, and after the top two, the next three players all shot 43s: Ian Miller, Ryan States and Jesse Verdill, giving Punxsy it's final score of 165.

Miller had a birdie on hole No. 3, and States birdied the sixth to highlight their rounds.

Unfortunately for Punxsy, although DuBois didn't have the low-scorer, it did have four players within four strokes of DeChurch's 38.

Urbassik's 39, Nate Crawford's 40, Trey Gilmore's 41 and Brad Gresock's 42 gave DuBois a final score of 162 and the victory.

Even though Conrad was pleased with his team's overall performance, he still knows they're capable of performing on a higher level.

"We just can't pull a day together where we have more than one person shoot in the 30s," he said.

Looking forward to Punxsy's next match Wednesday at Indiana, Conrad knows his team needs to bring in low scores to win.

"We have several guys capable of shooting in the 30s; we just need to do it," he said. "And that's what we'll have to do to win against Indiana."

Wednesday's match will be the first away match for Punxsy, which will play four consecutive road matches before returning home.

It's a busy week for Punxsy's players, who begin their school year today and will play in their third match this week Thursday against DuBois Central in DuBois.
