PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team won its first game of the season Friday, downing the Clarion Lady Bobcats in Punxsutawney, 34-13.

The Lady Chucks jetted out to a 7-0 lead, only for Clarion to come back with a pair of buckets that set the score at 7-4 after one quarter. Everything changed after the first quarter, as the Lady Chucks finished the game on a 27-9 run.

Punxsy outscored the Lady Bobcats by a 15-3 margin during the second quarter, taking a 22-7 advantage into the break.

The second half was much of the same, as Punxsy scored eight points to Clarion's two during the third quarter before both squads managed four points during the final frame.

Leading Punxsy — which has a roster of seven eighth-graders — was Nicole DiPietro, who scored nine points. She tallied seven points during the first half.

Shaina Painter added seven points, including six during the second quarter, and both Jensen Constantino and Anna Horner totaled six points during the game.

The Lady Chucks (1-1) return to the court this morning when they take part in the Clarion Shootout. Also competing in the tournament — which begins at 8:30 a.m. — will be Clarion, DuBois, A-C Valley, North Clarion, Keystone, Union and Karns City.

Punxsy faces Keystone at 9:30 a.m. and then plays its final two games at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
