Punxsy earns first D-IX sweep of year

ST. MARYS — With the Punxsy boys' basketball team hosting the Flying Dutch of St. Marys Tuesday night, the Lady Chucks took to the road to St. Marys with one thing on their minds: Earning a sweep over the Lady Dutch in District-IX play this season.

The Lady Chucks had positioned themselves to do so with a 62-50 home win over St. Marys Jan. 17, and Punxsy reached its goal of a sweep with a 42-36 victory over the Lady Dutch in St. Marys.

"This was just a really nice win for the girls," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said about the team's effort. "It was good to see them pick it up on the road."

Punxsy jumped out to an early lead in the first half, outscoring the Lady Dutch 16-9 in the first quarter alone.

Punxsy then extended its lead in the second quarter by outdoing St. Marys, 11-7, to take a 27-16 lead into halftime.

Unfortunately for Punxsy, the third quarter was a different story, with the Lady Dutch putting up 11 points and the Lady Chucks managing just six in the quarter.

"The second half, we seemed to get a bit tentative on defense," Reitz said. "We still need to improve on our checking out and eliminate their opportunities to put up second chance points."

Still holding onto a 33-27 lead entering the fourth quarter, though, Punxsy managed to do what it had to do and played even with the Lady Dutch during the fourth quarter, 9-9, to earn the 42-36 victory.

One thing that stood out to Reitz was his team's defense.

"We played very well on the defensive end tonight," he said. "Holding St. Marys to 36 points on their home floor is a very good accomplishment."

Taylor Newcome (center picture) led the way offensively for Punxsy with 15 points, and Adair Gennocro was the game's top-scorer with 16.

Jensen Constantino was Punxsy's next-best scorer with seven points, and Ally Fye and senior Alex Magill followed closely with six points each.

"Overall, it was a very good team effort," Reitz said. "We're ready to get back at it now and prepare for DuBois."

Up next, the Lady Chucks will host the Lady Beavers of DuBois, whom they defeated 33-25 Jan. 26 in DuBois, Friday.

"They're playing much better basketball when we played them in DuBois, though," Reitz said. "So, it'll be tough."

The Lady Chucks close out the regular season next week with a pair of home games — next Tuesday against non-league A-C Valley and next Friday against the Lady Owls of Bradford.

In the JV contest, Punxsy was edged out by a tough St. Marys squad, 35-33.

Anna Horner led the way offensively for the Lady Chucks with 10 points, and Emily Reitz followed closely with nine in the losing cause.
