PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” For the seventh time in eight home matches, the Punxsy volleyball dispatched its opponents in three games.
The Lady Chucks calmly blanked their second opponent in as many night in a 3-0 defeat over the Lady Wolves of Kane on Tuesday night.
The Lady Chucks (11-3) disposed of their opponent by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22.
With the win, Punxsy has now won 21 of 24 games played on its home court this season with the lone defeat coming at the hands of AAAA powerhouse Altoona.
"Kane has had a very solid season team in the past and this year is no difference," said Punxsy coach Heather Good. "We were able to stay calm, and offensively we were able to throw them off."
The Punxsy frontline was paced by seven kills from both Sydney Weaver and Emilee States. Weaver added four aces, 20 digs and a pair of blocks to her while States finished her stats with seven digs and a block.
Bella Gallina hit four kills and Taylor Newcome, who had one dig, had three kills of her own. Shayla Brink completed the frontline with two kills, two aces, eight digs and an assist.
Shania Painter handed out a team-high nine assists to go with five digs. Setter Ashley Reitz had seven assists of her own while digging five balls and serving an ace.
On the back row, Chelsea Engeholm produced 11 digs and two aces. Sydney Phillips had four digs and an ace, with Ivy Phillips adding three digs and an ace.
In the opening game, Punxsy held an early narrow 6-5 lead. After a Kane service error, Punxsy scored the next three points behind a States hit and Sydney Phillips ace to open a 10-5 advantage.
The home team added to the margin a few points later when Reitz laced an ace and Weaver downed a kill for a 14-6 tally. The Lady Chucks enjoyed a five-point cushion the rest of the game until sealing the 25-21 win on another Lady Wolves service error.
In the first part of the second contest, the teams were tied seven times. Punxsy opened a three-point lead, 14-11, on a Gallina kill off the Kane block.
The home team kept no less than a two-point advantage until recording three-straight points with the third on a Weaver kill off the Kane defenders for a 22-16 game.
A few minutes later, Gallina tipped the ball over the net and it fell to the floor for the game-winner, 25-19.
The Lady Wolves held tough in the third game. Punxsy was able to open a 16-10 lead, only to see Kane slowly chip away at the lead until tying the contest, 20-20.
After a second timeout in less than 10 points, Punxsy produced the contest's next three points with an Ivy Phillips ace making it 23-20.
Four points later, Brink added her own ace to complete the three-game sweep, 25-22.
"It was a great game and we were able to have a good showing," added Good.
In the night's opening match, the Punxsy Junior Varsity posted its own shut out of Kane. The Lady Chucks prevailed 25-23 and 25-13.
"In the first game, we had a lot of service errors. Once we corrected it in game two, the players were able to do much better and play their game more," said JV coach Tabi Bowers.
Punxsy will have a day off before playing at DuBois starting at 6 p.m. Thursday night.View more articles in:
