PUNXSUTAWNEY – After taking a double figure lead into the final quarter, the Punxsy seventh-grade girls' basketball team had to hang on for the win, 28-22, against a charging DuBois Central squad on Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
The pair of Leah Miller and Kaitlyn Doverspike led the Lady Chucks' (10-1) effort with six points apiece.
Only a point behind, Elyse White and Kylee Lingenfelter added five points each.
Alyse Whitman chipped in four tallies, while Toya Jones had two points to complete the Punxsy scoring line.
"I was extremely pleased with how the girls passed and distributed the ball during this contest with DCC," said Punxsy coach Darrin Kriebel.
"This team has been seeing their fair share of zone defenses (as of late), and the guards did a fine job of attacking the gaps (of that zone) and always looking for the open person."
Punxsy started the afternoon solidly with a 6-0 edge in the first six minutes.
The Lady Chucks continued their good play with a 6-2 second quarter, giving them a 12-2 halftime lead.
They extended the margin to 13 points, 21-8, coming out of the half.
The Lady Cardinals did not give up, though.
The visitors pushed hard in the final frame and were able to pull to within four points at one point. Punxsy would not let DCC get any closer for the 28-22 win.
"It was definitely a fun game to both coach and watch and to continue to watch the growth and progress that this entire team has made (since mid-August)," added Kriebel.
Punxsy will now be off until traveling to face an always-tough Hollidaysburg team on Monday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m.View more articles in:
