Punxsy’s Devin Mesoraco named to NL All-Star team for first time

July 6, 2014

DEVIN MESORACO

CINCINNATI — Punxsutawney's own Devin Mesoraco — the current starting catcher for the Cincinnati Reds — has been having a spectacular season, and as is the case with Major League Baseball players who are having such seasons, Mesoraco was named to his first All-Star Game as a representative of the National League when the rosters were announced Sunday.

Mesoraco's baseball career started right here in Punxsy, and his accolades to this point included being named a Baseball America Triple-A All-Star and a Futures Game participant while playing with the Louisville Bats in 2011.

He also made his MLB debut as a late-season call-up in 2011.

Now, he's reached the All-Star level at baseball's highest level — and deservedly so.

This season, after starting the season on the short-term disabled list, Mesoraco has been lighting up the scoreboard for the Reds.

In 52 games, he's recorded 58 hits, and he is currently batting .317 with a .379 on-base percentage.

Mesoraco was selected to the team by the National League's manager, Mike Matheny.

Earlier this season, Mesoraco hit a home run in five straight games.

His 15 home runs and 13 doubles, 30 runs scored and 42 RBI to-date have helped propel Cincinnati to its 45-42 record in the closely contested National League Central.

Mesoraco will be joined on the All-Star roster by three teammates — starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, closer Ardolis Chapman and third baseman Todd Frazier. All three of the other players were selected as reserves on the players ballot.

The All-Star Game will be played on July 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
