PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students at Punxstawney Area Middle School held their annual Veterans’ Day assembly Thursday with Student Government President Jacob Horner, a seventh-grader, as the master of ceremonies.

“It was fun — hard speaking up there — but it felt good to show thanks to the Veterans,” he said.

The assembly began with a choral reading of “Hat’s Off,” by Alan Major’s fourth-grade class, followed by Darren Sherry’s fifth-grade class reading of “In Flander’s Field.”

Next, the band and chorus then performed several songs, including “March of the Armed Forces,” “This is my Country,” and “God Bless the USA.”
The sixth- and seventh-grade classes then presented a Powerpoint on the wars in which America has fought.

Lt. Col. Francis Romeo performed his annual tribute, “If this Flag Could Talk,” followed by an iMovie prepared by AmeriCorps teachers for local troops in the military, with the chorus singing “Thank you, Soldiers.”
The presentation was opened and closed by Assistant Principal Mike Guidice, who said, “I thought it went well. I appreciate the hard work by the teachers and students. We really appreciate all that the veterans have done, and this is our small way of saying thank you.”
