Public Works Committee reports on leaf collection, PennDOT railroad project

November 5, 2012

Punxsy Borough Manager Ben White

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Committee held its Public Works/Wastewater Committee meeting on Monday.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry Chenoga, and Borough Manager Ben White gave an update on the leaf collection that has been taking place.

White reported that this is the third week for leaf pickup and said that overall, it has been a pretty good leaf season.

White also reported that the H20 project has practically been completed.

The final touches will be a bit of restoration while the borough awaits grant reimbursement from the state.

Council member Eric Story said those in charge of the project "did an excellent job," though he did have a concern about the
manholes near Horatio Street.

His fear is that when the snow begins to fall, motorists may hit the the back of the manhole covers.

Chenoga said they will make sure reflectors are put up so motorists can see them.

Also at the Public Works meeting:
• White said that the Community Center roof project is still on-going and, weather permitting, should be complete by the end of the week.
"The borough has spent a lot of CDBG money to repair the roof," said White.

• PennDOT's Elk Run Bridge project restored the railroad bridge.
The major project along Route 310 and 119 will start in the spring, council reported.

There will be detours by Routes 36 and 119. A utility meeting will be held at PennDOT concerning the project, and more information will be provided at a later time.

• Council gave the OK for the Sewer Crew vacancy to be filled. Randy Verdill has left his position, and Chenoga said he was sad to see him go.

Council will vote on the position on Nov. 13.

At the Legal and Finance Committee meeting:
• The 2013 budget will be presented on Nov. 13.

• There are currently two vacancies open — one on the Planning Commission Board and one on the Zoning Hearing Board.

After resigning from the Planning Commission due to schedule conflicts, Dan Spencer has expressed an interest in the Zoning Board Vacancy.

More interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

In order to be on either board, one must be a borough resident.

Planning Commission meets once a month, while the Zoning Hearing Board meets as needed.

It is a great opportunity for anyone looking to help out the community and make a difference, council said.

No experience is needed, and paid training is provided.

Anyone who is interested may contact White at 938-4480 for more information.
