PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Punxsutawneyâ€™s PRIDE has something to be proud of.
The non-profit organization is pleased to announce the reprinting of â€śOut of Our Kitchens,â€ť a cookbook, according to board member Shirley Sharp, prepared from the recipes of local cooks.
The 215-page Cookbook Publishers Inc. product â€” originally compiled and published by the 1981-82 members of the Punxsutawney Young Womenâ€™s Club, which no longer exists â€” has been out of print for more than 20 years.
After receiving permission to reprint, PRIDE (Punxsutawney Revitalization: Investing, Developing, Enhancing) refreshed the community cookbook by including current pictures of local scenes â€” inserted to separate the sections â€” and formated the recipes in a larger, easier-to-read font.
The PRIDE reprint is divided into seven segments, including: â€śAppetizers, Pickles, Relishes;â€ť â€śSoups, Salads, Vegetables;â€ť â€śMain Dishes;â€ť â€śBreads, Rolls, Pastry;â€ť â€śCakes, Cookies, Desserts;â€ť â€śCandy, Jelly, Preserves;â€ť and â€śBeverages and Miscellaneous.â€ť
From Carol Meneelyâ€™s â€śPineapple Snow Cakeâ€ť to Pam Boyerâ€™s â€śBeef Biscuit Pieâ€ť and everything in between, the publication â€” which benefits the area, as all proceeds will be put toward downtown â€” offers readers, in addition to a helping of hometown spirit, a slice of Punxsutawneyâ€™s past.
One, and in some cases two, generations of area residents have enjoyed food prepared using the recipes in the book, Sharp said.
â€śWhatâ€™s interesting is, the people who gave these recipes are now marrying off their daughters,â€ť she said. â€śThese people cooked for their children and their children have these memories of this food.â€ť
PRIDE board member and former Punxsutawney Young Womenâ€™s Club member Katie Laska recommended the reprinting project due to the number of requests she had received for the book.
â€śIt is a great way to hand down old family recipes to a new generation of cooks,â€ť she said. â€śAll of these women take pride in their recipes and are pleased to share them with their hometown.â€ť
The book is available at downtown merchants, including Fairlady & Company, the Chamber of Commerce, Catarinaâ€™s, Rosemanâ€™s Florist & Gifts and Lilyâ€™s LLC.
