Police: Three killed, one injured after Clover Township wreck

October 25, 2012

SUMMERVILLE — Two Saint Marys residents and one Eldred resident were killed in a one-vehicle accident that occurred around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday on Route 28 east of Johns Hill Road in Clover Township, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

One other person, also from Saint Marys, was injured in the wreck.

The crash occurred as the vehicle, a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse, was traveling south on Route 28 in Clover Township.

The unit was ascending an uphill grade when, for unknown reasons, it traveled into the oncoming northbound lane and then off the east berm.

It continued along the grass-covered east side of the roadway for 92 feet before striking a large tree with the left front corner.

It continued another 28 feet and impacted another large tree head-on.

It then spun counter-clockwise approximately 260 degrees and came to a final rest in the northbound lane facing northwest, after which it caught fire, police said.

During the rotation of the vehicle, the front seat passenger, Christina Karnes, 24, Saint Marys, was ejected from the vehicle and was flown from the scene to UPMC Mercy Hospital for treatment of major injuries, police said.

The right rear passenger, Devin Mertz, Saint Marys, was flown from the scene with major injuries to UPMC Presbyterian, where he died on Oct. 25, police said.

The driver, Tyrell Ott, 26, Saint Marys, and the left rear passenger, Kelsey Stahli, 20, Eldred, were pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder.

Police said that, of the four passengers, Ott was the only one who was wearing a seatbelt.

Jefferson County EMS, Jefferson County Corner, Summerville Fire Department and McPherson Towing assisted at the scene.

The investigation continues.
