Peter Gilbert Himes, 78

Peter Gilbert Himes, 78, Huntingdon, Oneida Township, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Huntingdon Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born April 7, 1933, in Ringgold, a son of the late Paul and Virginia (Smith) Himes.

April 19, 1957, he married Marilyn L. Yeaney, who survives, at the Ringgold United Methodist Church with Pastor Gorman officiating.

Mr. Himes graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army from May 1953 to May 1955 as a paratrooper in the 162nd, 11th Airborne out of Fort Campbell, Ky., and he also served as a radio operator for Battery A 457th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Parachutist Badge.

Mr. Himes retired in 1991, after working for 29 years in the Department of Corrections as a transporting officer.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He traveled many times for fishing trips to Canada. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Bearcat Football and wrestling.

Mr. Himes enjoyed traveling, including a special trip to France where he and his wife visited their son and daughter-in-law. He also enjoyed hiking and visiting with family and friends.

Mr. Himes served many years as the treasurer of the SCI Huntingdon Retirees' Association and attended the 12th Street United Methodist Church, where he served in many functions.

He was also a regular at the Huntingdon Senior Center and McDonald's, where he enjoyed visiting with his friends.

During the last several years, Mr. Himes enjoyed evenings at home with his wife and their pets.

In addition to his wife, who resides at their Oneida Township residence, surviving relatives include three children, Barbara (Himes) Gongloff and husband Donald Jr. of James Creek, Bradley S. Himes and wife Maureen (Madden) of Penfield, N.Y., and Brenda Himes-Long and husband Kyle of Huntingdon; five grandchildren, Candace (Gongloff) Brumbaugh and husband Robert A. of James Creek, Joseph T. Gongloff of Manhattan, Kan., Katelyn L. Long of State College, and Lindsay Himes and Connor Himes, both of Penfield, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Alaina L. and Carly C. Brumbaugh of James Creek; three brothers, Wayne Himes and wife Joy of Brookville, Clair Himes and wife Loretta of New Bethlehem and Leroy Himes and wife Julia of Ringgold; a sister, Eva (Himes) Caylor and husband Richard of Ashtabula, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, Laird Powell of Porter and Howard Yeaney and wife Donna of Reynoldsville; a sister-in-law, Debra Porter of Punxsutawney; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy (Himes) Conrad; and a brother, Bernard Himes.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2012, and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2012, at the Cutright Funeral Home, Smithfield Chapel, 313 Fairgrounds Rd., Huntingdon.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2012, at the funeral home with Pastor Wayne Richards and Pastor Georgetta "Cookie" Hartley officiating.

Interment will be at Donation Cemetery, Huntingdon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Himes' memory may be made to the 12th Street United Methodist Church, 313 12th St., Huntingdon, Pa. 16652; or to the Huntingdon County Humane Society, 11371 Schoolhouse Hollow Rd., Huntingdon, Pa. 16652.
