With a busy work season approaching, PennDOT is reminding residents of the importance of driving safely around work zones.

To do so, the Jefferson County Maintenance Office in Punxsutawney recently hosted the PennDOT Worker Memorial, which pays tribute to the more than 84 PennDOT workers killed on the job since 1970.

It was created in 2001 by PennDOT employees in Bradford County both to honor the workers and to raise awareness among motorists of the potential consequences of driving inattentively in work zones.

The memorial includes one Jefferson County employee — Robert Greeley, who died in 1982. His daughter, Diane Ananea (second from left) and her husband, Paul Ananea (second from right), are pictured with Greeley's memorial.

Also pictured are county manager Josh Clinger (left) and James O'Donnell (right), who was one of Greeley's foremen.

In the last five years, there have been 19 work zone crashes in Jefferson County, resulting in 13 injuries and one fatality among drivers and passengers.

In the interest of promoting safety, PennDOT encourages drivers to do the following when they encounter work zones: drive the posted work zone speed limit, pay close attention to signs and flaggers, turn on your headlights if the signs say to do so, maintain a safe distance around vehicles without tailgating, use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly, avoid distractions such as cellphones and texting, always wear your seatbelt, expect the unexpected and be patient.
